Luck of the Irish

As I currently enjoy a short holiday in Ireland, I have seen lots of things with the saying “Luck of the Irish”. It sure would be nice to have a bit of luck on your side. Have you ever met those people who seem to make the tough projects look easy? They seem to move up the ladder quickly at work? They seem to have good luck on their side or do they?

Luck of the Irish?

From my experience success does not happen by accident. Don’t believe in the saying they got a “Lucky Break”. If people are successful then they have envisioned and chartered out their course.

Engrain the Vision

Success comes from hard work and starts with the ability to create a vision. If you have a clear vision of where you want to go then your actions and behavior will lead you in that direction. If you have struggled with career success in the past then you must ask yourself “Do I have a vision of where I want to be five years from now?” Finally, have you shared this vision with a trusted friend or mentor? Try doing this and be ready to answer questions about the how as well. You need to be able to handle the pressure of this visibility if you want to succeed.

Define Boundaries

Do a good assessment of where you are now once you have a solid vision in place. You will need to think about the things you need to work on to get to your desired end state. This will help you define the specific goals to support your mission. I would suggest using these to define the boundaries of what you will do and more importantly what you will not do. If you want to publish and write a book over the next year, don’t decide to take on other activities that steal away the time. If you do, then you have no one to blame but yourself for losing your focus.

So is it Luck?

So next time you see someone achieving and making things look easy, try and remember that they are not doing this by accident. I would bet they have a clear vision and make decisions based on supporting this in their daily life. They have gotten to a point where it is automatic for them to act and react in the direction of their goal. But if you do see a four leaf clover while out on a walk, pick it up because it is still fun.
